Heart Art

The kindergartners designed giant hearts with
crayon and then used watercolor paints on top
to make beautiful valentines!

Art Centers

On this day, I set up Art centers for the kids.  They sure
loved it!  Everyone was so happy.  At one center they
made a Bald Eagle puppet and I taught them about
that bird.

I thought these puppets looked pretty cool!

At this center, they watched a video of bird artist, David
Sibley as he taught them how to draw a Black-capped
Chickadee.

I was very impressed with how their sketches
turned out!

At this center, they used Q-tips to paint a snowman.

Reading Centers

On some mornings, I teach the Reading lesson and then the kids are put into groups where they rotate from one table to the other working on language arts skills.  The kids love it and it teach them responsibility.  They have to work hard, do their own work or work together depending on the activity and they have to clean their area before I give the signal to move on.  Here is another glimpse into your kindergartner's day.

This activity seemed to be a favorite.

This activity focuses on sight words.  Build it, write it
and then read it in a sentence.

I always include a book reading center where I can
listen to them read the books aloud.

The students are making the letters I wrote on the chart.

Making letters with play-doh is a good activity.

Birds From Nicaragua For All

A big thank you to Tanya Urquieta for mailing us a surprise from Nicaragua!  Each of the student were able to choose three of these cute birds that Tanya purchased at the market.  The kids were very excited!

Do You Think it Will Float?

Today I taught them the scientific method.  We talked about how scientist are curious people and they wonder about things.  Then they make some guesses before they do experiments to see it they were right.  I had the students guess if they thought certain items would float or sink.  They wrote that in marker in the "Guess" column.  Then we did the experiment using "Preheim's Pond".  I would ask, "Do you think it would float?"  They would do a drum roll on the table before I tossed it into the pond.  Then they would use their pencil to write "Yes or No".  It was a lot of fun and there was quite a bit of cheering!  At the end, we all threw our pencils in to be silly!  Guess what?  They floated!

Winter Snow Scenes

I cut shapes into potatoes and they stamped a snow scene with that and small sponges.  Then they added the details with Q-tips and colorful paint to make a masterpiece.  These kids really love art projects!

identify 240 species of birds today!  Wow!

Bird-y Christmas Tree Art

This art project was very popular with the kindergartners and they were so happy as they decorated their paper Christmas tree with bird photos.  They were also excited to look through the magazines and see birds that they knew.  Here are some of their masterpieces.

Here we are on May 14th, the last day of school.  This day is always bittersweet for the kids and I who have become like a family.  We know ...
