After reading the Laura Ingalls Wilder picture books to the kindergartners, I knew I had to make butter with them. I poured one pint of heavy cream into a small plastic peanut butter jar. Then I dropped in two marbles. The kids shook and shook the cream. First, it became whipped cream and then it turned into butter. Here is the finished product. The remaining milk {buttermilk} was separated from the butter. The kids ate it on graham crackers. It was interesting to them how it could happen and that people used to churn butter because they couldn't buy it at the store.
