March 8th - Fun Science Lesson
I created a science lesson that I knew my bird-loving
kindergartners would love. After reading a bird book
about the different kinds of bird's bills, the students had
a chance to tell the name of the bird and place it in the
correct column.
March 8th - Read Across America Day
Today's centers were based a bit on Dr. Seuss books.
They made the cat in the hat and wrote -at chunk
words that rhyme.
At one center they put a tally mark for each
book that they read.
They decorated a headband that said, "Read" on it.
It was also pajama day, so they read books while
being cozy.
March 3, 2021 Exploring the Lake in the Winter
One of my favorite activities to do with the kindergartners
is to take them on outings to the lake in town. The focus
today was to look at winter. We talked about the ice and
ice safety. We observed the grass, trees and bushes. It
was a warm day and we didn't need coats, so I talked
as we get closer to spring there will be warm and cold days.
How cute are they?
We had a very nice time exploring!
The kids were identifying birds with their binoculars,
but also by ear. We have been working on birds songs
and they were able to ID the White-breasted Nuthatch,
Eurasian Collared-Dove, Blue Jay and European Starlings.
The star of the day was this Great Horned Owl
sitting on her nest.
March 17th - Leprechauns On The Loose!
Once again the leprechauns messed up our classroom while looking for gold! They did not find any, but they left notes and the kindergartners were soon on a treasure hunt of their own that sent them through the school following clues! It was very exciting and at the end, they finally found their own treasure - gold wrapped candy! It was a fun and silly time for the kids! Johanna said to the class in a spooky voice, "This is not even a game. This is serious."
Mrs. Gerber found this note after hearing some rustling
in her office and seeing a flash of green.
The cook saw something green whiz by and then
saw a note taped to her door under the shamrock.
Mrs. Wilson, their music teacher, said she heard
some racket and then saw a green note on the piano.
"The leprechauns are crazy!"
Each kindergartner got to find a note and
read it to their friends.
The last note said that you will find your treasure
in a place you like to play.
Tucker found the treasure in the toy area!
The kindergartners LOVED the treasure hunt and
all the excitement that these silly leprechauns
conjured up. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
On a side note...I have done this St. Patrick's Day treasure hunt every year for 27 years, except for last year due to the pandemic. I often ask older students what they remember about kindergarten and they often say that this treasure hunt, Rascal and our field trip were three of the things they remember.
